The Rembrandt tour. (bike tour app. 40km)
Leaving the Dunes behind we go straight East, through the land of flower bulbs and pastures, alongside the ‘Haarlemmer trekvaart’ (Waterway), past Voorhout and the beautiful wind mills. In lee of the dyke, were the traffic and railway stream past, we’ll cycle at a comfortable distance. Further on towards Warmond, past manors, boats, storks, herons and cows.
Unbelievably fast we’ll reach the centre of Leiden, a old Holland town, it’s history present all over the city.
In 1606 Rembrandt was born here and learnt his trade as a painter. The city centre hasn’t really changed since that time. Narrow alleyways that are hard to get to and a castle, that’s hardly visible.
In 2006 this anniversary will be duly celebrated. Beware; you could spontaneously be selected for a nightwatch! (Outside the town we will decide whether we’ll visit the town by bike or on foot).
Via the ‘Morspoort’ (city gate) we’ll leave the town, past the ‘Museum Naturalis’, towards Valkenburg and Katwijk-Binnen. You’ll cross the 'Oude Rijn' and cycle past the ESA/Estec laboratries (space research). At last your route will go through the park near “De Bergstichting”, along the dunes and again towards Noordwijk aan Zee and the starting point.
